PIHA SURF CONTEST
Easy Win For Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 27.
The Auckland representative surf team scored a good win at Piha today over the touring Queensland surf lifesaving team by 24 points to 10 in a turbulent and difficult sea.
The Queensland team arrived in New Zealand late last night and their unfamiliarity with the conditions, affected their performance. Of the eight events in the contest the visitors won only the beach relay and the surf ski race. M. Kropp won the ski race.
Heavy, broken surf and a strong rip caused the junior beltman’s race to be declared no contest although G. Allnutt, of Auckland, struggled to swim within 10ft of his buoy before heavy waves swept him back. R. Harker (Auckland) beat his team-mate, J. Jenkins, and N. Coleman, of Queensland, in the senior belt race. In the senior surf race, Harker was beaten by two other Aucklanders, D. Ritchie and W. Corbett in a close finish.
