EMPYREAN DEAD
Notable Sire In Australia (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE. The imported sire Empyrean, which sired the winners of about £400,000 dropped dead at Stockwell, north of Melbourne last Thursday. He was aged 22. Empyrean was foaled in England and was bought for Kismet Stud, near Melbourne. Later he was bought by Stockwell Stud and his first crop of two-year-olds raced in 1961. Among Empyrean’s best winners were Coppelious, winner of the Caulfield Guineas and Victoria Derby, Sunish (Australian Cup), Pure Fire (V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes and A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes), Chicola (V.R.C. Oaks), Sabah (Adrian Knox Stakes), and the Doomben Ten Thuosand winner, Grey Ghost. Empyrean, which was repre sented by 20 winners last season, was the sire of the dam of Victoria’s champion filly Vienna, which has been unbeaten in her three starts.
