GEOTHERMAL PROJECT
N.Z. Men Rack From Chile
Z. Preu Association)
WELLINGTON, Dec. 26
Three New Zealanders have returned from a United Nations assignment in Chile, where they have examined proposals to explore geothermal resources for producing electricity. They are the chief geothermal engineer for the Ministry of Works (Mr J. H. Smith), the deputy head of the Wairakei geothermal power project (Mr I. A. Innes), and an assistant director-general of the D.S.I.R. (Mr I. D. Dick). The three were sent by the Government at the request of the United Nations Special Fund, which was helping the Chilean Government to investigate its geothermal resources.
The request was believed to be a recognition of New Zealand's original work in the field as several other countries, notably Italy, had considerable experience in geothermal power.
