(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Dec. 26.
It was quite clear that a clothing salesman, Brian Lewis Thwaites, aged 40, had been living from the proceeds of false pretences, in both New Zealand and Australia, said Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., on Friday. He gaoled Thwaites for two years and a half on 29 of the 38 charges on which he appeared for sentence, having pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.
On the remaining nine, Thwaites w'as convicted and discharged. The charges—3s of false pretences and three of obtaining credit by fraud—were committed in 1963 and involved £1069.
The Magistrate said Thwaites had already served a gaol term in Australia for being in unlawful possession of the goods mentioned in eight of the charges. Thwaites had a long history of dishonesty.
