RELEASE HOSTEL
Wellington Plan
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Dec. 27.
A post-release hostel will be established in Wellington. The Wellington Prisoners’ Aid ' and Rehabilitation Society has sought assistance to establish the hostel, and it is expected it will come into use early in 1966. The hostel would be based 'on the Norman House concept which had been-success-ful in the United Kingdom, said the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan). It would provide living accommodation under controlled conditions for selected prisoners on their discharge from prison. One such hostel for young offenders is already in use in Mr Hanan's electorate at Invercargill. The Minister said he knew from personal observation it was serving a “most useful purpose.” The time had arrived to establish similar hostels elsewhere, he said.
