Elephant Timid

AUCKLAND, Dec. 26.
Malani, the Auckland zoo’s elephant, may be exposed regularly to tape recordings of children’s laughter and chatter in an effort to get her accustomed to the noise.
Her keeper and trainer, Mr T. Oosterdyke, said that Malani tended to be frightened by strange noises. When a school party was in the zoo he had the children make a noise in front of her, he said.
"She moved away from the landing where she was standing,” he said, “so I’ve asked to have tape recordings made to get her used to it. She is still a young elephant and inclined to act like any young person.”
