Magistrate’s Court Fined £25 For Stabbing Another Crew Member
A ship’s steward who stabbed another member of the crew in the stomach was fined £25 when he appeared before Mr H. J. Evans, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday. William George Keenan, aged 17, pleaded guilty to a charge of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at Lyttelton on December 22. Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary said that some of Keenan’s companions found him in a cafe, drunk. They assisted him back to the ship, but on the way he stabbed one of them with a sheath knife. The wound was not serious. ABSENT FROM SHIP Pleading guilty to charges of being absent without leave ifrom a ship at Napier on December 17, Kevin Harry Ambler, aged 19, and Roger Terrence Gregory, aged 20, stewards, were convicted and remanded in custody to December 31. UNDER INFLUENCE Bruce Francis McDonald, aged 36, a painter, was fined £2O and his driver’s licence was cancelled for three years, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of riding a power-cycle under the influence of drink or drugs at Sockburn on December 23. On a charge of riding a power-cycle under the influence of drink or drugs in Worcester street on December 23, Francis Andrew Sumner, aged 40, a postal sorter, was convicted and fined £2O, and his driver’s licence was cancelled for three years. He pleaded guilty. THEFT Appearing for sentence on a charge of stealing £63 4s 6d from a service station on December 22, Robert Henry Sutherland, aged 27, a driver, was fined £35, placed on probation for one year, and ordered to live and work where directed by the probation officer, and to take out a prohi'btion order.
WILFUL DAMAGE Charged with wilfully damaging a telephone hand-piece in the Silver Grill Cafe, Manchester street, on December 24, Paul Maxwell Parker, aged 23, an exchange operator, was fined £l5 and ordered to make restitution of £4 10s. He pleaded guilty. PERMITS EXPIRED Ali Akbar, aged 22, a clicker, and John Lal Shand, aged 22, a welder, were convicted and remanded on bail to January 17 for sentence on charges of remaining in New Zealand after their permits to do so had expired. Both pleaded guilty and were represented by Mr S. G. Erber. REMANDED David Woods, aged 30, a metal polisher, charged with assault and assault with intent to injure on December 22, was remanded on bail to January 20.
