Softball Team Has Title Quest
The Canterbury women’s softball team begins its quest for the Bensil Cup, the symbol of provincial supremacy, when it plays its first game in Auckland today.
Canterbury has lost the I services of four experienced) players but is still expected to give a good account of itself. The battery of B. Makinson and N. Beale has been combining well this season. Mak-) inson has been pitching with her usual guile and has sufficient strength in her arm to upset opposing sides. M. Hapuku has retained her short-stop berth and will be an asset if she produce, her best form. Two very experienced players, E. Law and L. Leask, hold the outfield positions and both have been playing up to their best form this season. J. Moher, the utility is a very versatile player and the experience she will gain should improve her play still further. B. Turbott, J. Jones, K. McICormick and J. Davies make !up the rest of the teim. ) Canterbury is expected to ) play Wellington, Hutt Valley, the defending champions. Otago. Waikato, Manawatu and Auckland but the tournament draw has not yet been finalised. The team will be making every effort to regain the championship it lost last year.
