STROKE-PLAY GOLF Dobson Leads With 69, 80
In spite of an 80 in the afternoon round, 1. Dobson (Waitikiri) led the field bv three strokes after 36 holes in the Christchurch Golf Club’s annual Christmas tournament at Shirley yesterday.
However, it was Dobson’s first round of 69, four under par, that ensured him of a comfortable lead for the final 36 holes today.
the best golf of the second round. A 14-handicap junior. P. McHerron, carded a net 66 in the morning and by the end of the second round led both the junior stroke and handicap events. Hope Withdrew W. Revell, one of the early leaders with a first round of 76, had to withdraw from the tournament, while D. R. Hope was prevented from playing by illness. Dobson’s play, like that of 'most other players, was affected by the strong, gusty, north-westerly wind during the afternoon.
J. F. Hartley, last year’s winner, and I. D. Cromb, both of whom had 72s in the morning, failed to overcome their three-stroke deficit, and it was left to M. R. Bland and J. R. Broadhurst to produce
Watson Shield.— Wellington yesterday ended Auckland s sixyear tenure of the Matson Shield —for the annual interassoclation Catholic tennis fixture—when it won 15-9. Wellington won five out of the six mixed doubles to clinch the trophy.
