BIG TASK AHEAD
Victoria 399 Behind
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE
After a two-day break, Victoria today resumes its first innings in the Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales still 399 runs behind and with four wickets down.
At the close of play on Friday it had scored 199 for four in reply to the New South Wales’ first innings of 592. And at one stage Victoria was 57 for three. But defiant knocks of 82 not out by K. Stackpole and 20 not out by a newcomer, P. Sheehan, so far has produced a partnership of 82. The test batsman, K. D. Walters, who contributed only nine to the mammoth New South Wales total, was the most successful bowler with three for 52.
He captured the wickets of W. M. Lawry (43), I. R. Redpath (10) and J. Potter (34). He also caught R. M. Cowper for a “duck” off the bowling of D. Renneberg.
