Appointment In Singapore

WELLINGTON, Dec. 26. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced tonight the appointment of Mr James Harrison Weir as High Commissibner for New Zealand in Singapore.
“As I announced last month the New Zealand and Singapore governments have agreed to an exchange of High Commissioners. I said then that an appointment would be announced later,” said Mr Holyoake. “I am pleased that it has been possible to appoint to this position a man of Mr Weir’s wide experience in the external affairs field.” Mr Weir is at present deputy to the Ambassador in Washington with the diplomatic rank of minister and has served also in New Zea-
land missions in New York. Ottawa and Canberra. He has attended many international conferences on behalf of New Zealand, including two meetings of the United Nations General Assembly and a number of conferences of specialised agencies of the United Nations, especially those dealing with economic and social affairs.” i Mr Weir joined the External i Affairs Department in 1947. !He was educated at ChristI church Boys’ High School and [graduated M.A. in history ifrom Canterbury University. [ He is married with four children, two of whom will | accompany him to Singapore. He is due to arrive there in i mid-February after a few weeks in New Zealand for [ official consultations and' leave.
