Theatre Company Closing Down
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, December 26.
A loss of nearly £4OOO on its productions of “The Student Prince” in November and the Christmas musical “Babes in Toyland” this month has ended the professional life of Theatre Arts.
The director, Mr Vivian Jacobs, said today that the losses on the two shows, which cost £16,000 to produce, took the society's accumulated losses to £lO.OOO. “This means the end for us as a professional society,” he said.
“I will now look for a job and carry-on with productions in the suburbs with no professional assistance.” Mr Jacobs said that costs at the Playhouse Theatre, including hire charges, front-of-house wages and orchestra fees, amounted to £lOOO a week.
j “This was too much for us ]to carry,” he said. “Next year |we hope to put on shows in ■ a school hall or war memorial (hall with only two pianos for
accompaniment. Our main aim will be to recoup losses.” Mr Frank Poore, director of the Light Opera Club, said it would be lucky to break even on its Christmas, pantomime ‘‘Aladdin.”
“It has been a dismal year for the theatre,” he said.
