FIRE BRIGADE BUSY ON CHRISTMAS EVE

The Christchurch Fire Brigade answered calls to 11 fires in the city and suburbs between 8 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Most of the fires involved grass or rubbish and were quickly brought under control, though a scrub and gorse fire at Ashby’s gravel pit which broke out at 4.43 p.m. took more than one hour to put out. Two small oven fires and a fire in a merry-go-round at the Bishopdale shopping centre were also dealt with before serious damage was done. Fairly Quiet Christmas Day and Boxing Day were comparatively quiet. However, there were several car fires. Called at 9.3 p.m. on Friday, one unit from Sockburn and one from Headquarters extinguished a rubbish fire in Haytons road on the property of Mr G. L. Rhodes. There was no damage. At 9.15 p.m one unit from Headquarters attended a wiring fire in a 1964-mode! car in Memorial avenue. The car. owned by Mr J. Rowley, was only slightly damaged.

At 9.36 p.m. a unit from Sockburn was called to another car fire, this time in a small car at the Sockburn end of Blenheim road. There was slight damage. At 12.17 a.m. on Saturday two units from Lyttelton were called to a fire in a stack of timber at 54 Norwich quay. Lyttelton, the property of Sinclair Melbourne. Ltd. i There was moderate damage to the timber. At 10.48 a.m., one unit from Sockburn extinguished a fire I in a 1954-model car in Wadely i avenue. There was no damage to the house. At 3.37 a.m. yesterday one unit from St. Albans was sent to a fire in a telephone box on the Main North road near the Waimakariri river bridge. The telephone booth was slightly damaged. Scrub Fires I At 3.12 p.m.. two units from New Brighton went to a scrub fire on the foreshore in Marine parade, and at 4.22 p.m. one unit from Headquarters and one from Sydenham extinguished a scrub fire on a vacant • section in ■ Whareora terrace. Heathcote. One unit from St. Albans ■ extinguished a fire in a paling ; fence at 316 Greers road about i 6.34 p.m. yesterday. The property is occupied by Hugh | Leon Martin. The fence was slightly damaged. At 6.35 p.m., a unit from Sockburn tvas called to a burning power pole in Haytons road. There was minor damage. A rubbish fire at 7.27 was extinguished b.v one unit from headquarters and one from St. Albans. It was at 35 Gordon avenue, the property of Harry Robern Capps. A small fire in the planks of No. 3 wharf at Lyttelton was extinguished by two units from the Lyttelton station at 8.10 p.m. There was no damage. I
