Television Diction

Sir,—lt is disturbing to hear, in certain television advertisements for toys and icecream, a standard of children’s oral reading which can hardly be called “average.” Even children of low reading ability would criticise the readers for stumbling, having little expression, failing to pause at commas or full stops, and so on. If the makers of television advertisements wish to employ children to read “punch” lines they should at least ensure that the youngsters have a reasonable level of fluency in reading. Television has a bad enough effect on many children’s reading without examples of this type.—Yours, etc., D. B. HUTTON. December 22, 1965.
