A.W. And J.H.E.S.

Sir,—Praise, gifts, thanks and feasts make much of what is Christmas. To each of these, this Christmas, something is added for those who have read the review by J.H.E.S. of “Long and Happy,” an autobiography by A.W. 1 read and reread that review, and with an excited appreciation, as a stranger, found that it must be the best Christmas gift I have had in nearly 70 years, one that at least can raise my “croaky cheers." For us nonSassenach who can savour the magic of good English, but who can never use it with native ease, it was a verywholesome feast indeed. For the skilled gifts and magic in the words of the old master and his “disciple” one clumsily offers thanks and praise for such feasts, that they have garnished not by dint of hard work alone. Thank you, also, for your choice from an earlier fellowship as to whom to honour and by whom.— Yours, etc.. H.F.B. December 25, 1965.
