U.N. Affirms Cook Is. Have Self Government

NEW YORK, Dec. 17. The United Nations General Assembly yesterday approved a resolution affirming that the Cook Islands had attained full internal selfgovernment. It also expressed appreciation to the New Zealand Government for its cooperation with the U.N. In a separate vote the Communist bloc unsuccessfully opposed two paragraphs of the resolution which say that the islanders have control of thefir own affairs and of their future. The Communist countries abstained in the final vote
on the whole resolution which was approved by 78 votes to none agatout, with 29 abstentions. Thei resolution also urged the U.N. specialised agencies to contribute to the economic development of the islands. The aesemfciy also approved a resolution requesting Britain “as a matter of urgency” to repeal ail discriminatory laws in Fiji and to establish an unqualified system of democratic representation on the basis of “one man—one vote." The resolution wm approved by 90 votes to three with 14 ateteotikma.
