Impressive Win By Derby Candidate

“The Press” Special Servlet AUCKLAND. Peterman, straight from hack company, scored an unexpected and meritorious win in the weight-for-age Queen Elizabeth 11 Plate at Pukekohe on Saturday. It was as good a Great Northern Derby trial as could be expected.

Peterman was in front, leading such well-regarded opponents as Damian’s Pride, Urupukapuka, Fairfleet, Fencourt and Royal Estate, with two furlongs of the mile and a quarter to run and he won by a length. Fairfleet, another three-year-old, was second. Mantovani and Urupukapuka were next. A chestnut gelding, by Le Filou from Lady Macbeth, Peterman finished second and fourth in two previous starts this season in mile events. Obviously he is more a stayer. He will have a mile and a half to go in the Derby, on December 27, and it might take a good one to beat him. GOOD SEASON Peterman's success extended the wonderful record this season of horses owned by Mr F. C. Johnstone, the president of the Waikato Racing Club.

Mr Johnstone said yesterday that it was not until he had been racing horses for 30 years, in 1961, that he won his first open handicap. This was with Conference. Now, with Peterman, All Smoke and Boodle, all trained by W. C. Winder at Te Rapa, he is enjoying a remarkable run of success.

Fairfleet was the first to go after the pacemaker Damian's Pride and altogether she performed very creditably. She kept on gamely in her chase after Peterman and was well clear of Mantovani at the post. SHORT OF RACING Urupukapuka was again, it seems, caught short of a race. She enjoyed a good run, close behind the leaders but could find nothing extra for the home straight. Urupukapuka was the eachway favourite. Fencourt, 2/2, was a rank failure, showing nothing of the dash which has distinguished his best performances. A soft track, cutting out very noticeably, precluded a fast time in the Queen Elizabeth IT Plate and the winning gallop was 2min 5 4-ssec. The fastest section was the first half-mile in 49 2-ssec. GAINED ADMIRERS Arbroath gained further admirers for the Auckland Cup when he scored decisively in the Hugh Dent Memorial, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Shaw Handicap, went to Arbroath's stablemate Antao.
