Driver Escapes Death

NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 19. A Wellington driver, John David Fitzgerald, aged 23, could have been crushed to death when the body of his stock car fell away as the car somersaulted twice in the air at a Stratford race meeting yesterday. Three cars hurtled around a corner, locked side by side, when Fitzgerald's car slewed sideways across the track and rolled over and over.
Fitzgerald lay dazed among the pipes used to reinforce the car body.
He was rushed to Stratford Hospital and was later discharged with bruising and lacerations to the legs and arms. The crash was the climax to a thrilling afternoon’s racing. In the first race, spectators scrambled for safety as two cars ran out of control towards them on a corner. Both cars smashed into the safety fence, head on.
