‘Discussions Constant’

(yew Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 19. Discussions were constantly taking place between the interested governments on the form of the defence arrangements in the part of the world referred to generally as east of Suez, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) tonight when the London report was referred to him.

He said that he had no information as to the exact nature of the statement made by Mr Wilson to President Johnson and so was unable to comment on it.

Mr Holyoake said that New Zealand already had an agreement with Malaysia. The South-east Asia Treaty Organisation was another such agreement and a further arrangement was that in which the Anzus Pact countries and other countries were assisting South Vietnam.

Discussions were always going on between all these countries as to the form, shape and size of the defence arrangements of the area, said the Prime Minister. Mr Holyoake said that Britain was not directly participating in the military help being given to South Vietnam, although she supported the initiative of the United States and other countries that were assisting the Government and people of South Vietnam.
