Orbiter Beats Robin Dundee At Auckland

(Ntw Zealand Press Association? AUCKLAND. The Christchurch pacer Orbiter increased his following for the Auckland Trotting Cup on December 28 when he won impressively in the Pezaro Memorial at Alexandra Park on Saturday night.

Another visitor, Robin Dundee, was an impressive second after being at the back of the field with two furlongs to go. Golcourt, a local candidate and the outsider of the 14horse field, went surprisingly well for third. Orbiter was one out without a trail all the way but he never really looked in danger of defeat once he had mastered the pacemaker, Gipsy Hanover, at the furlong. The Pezaro Memorial was the first leg of the T.A.B. double.

The second leg, the President’s Handicap, was won by the hot favourite, Glen Direct. The weather was fine and the track fast. GLENURQUHART BREAKS Glenurquhart broke at the start of the Pezaro Memorial. Gipsy Hanover was quickly in front and she led at the end of three furlongs from Golcourt, Orbiter, Smokeover, Bobbinet, Great Adlos and Vai Averil.

With a mile to go, Gipsy Hanover was a length and a quarter in front of Goilcourt and Orbiter (outside). Next were Bobbinet, Smokeover, Vai Averil, Great Adios (awkwardly placed on the ndls), Gay Robin, Rannack Song and Garcon d’Or. Robin Dundee had only Garry Dillon and Glenurquhart behind her. PACED FREELY Gipsy Hanover continued to pace freely in front and led into the last half-mile from Orbiter, Golcourt, Bobbinet, Smokeover, VaJ Averil, Great Adios, Rannack Song, Gay Robin, Avante, Garcon d’Or and Robin Dundee. Soon afterwards, Robin Dundee began a great run and was reasonably handy at the home turn. Orbiter had passed Gipsy Hanover then and Golcourt was still in behind and Bobbinet, Rannack Song, Vai Averil and Gay Robin were prominent. Orbiter carried on strongly

and he won decisively. Robin Dundee was a highly creditable second, three-parts of a length in front of Golcourt. Gay Robin was a close fourth, followed by Great Adios, Garcon d’Or, Gipsy Hanover, Bobbinet, Smokeover, Rannack Song, Vai Averil, Avante, and Glenurquhart. Garry Dillon was last. GLEN DIRECT HANDY General John, Glen Direct and Grande Garnison were the first three after the President's Handicap field had settled down. General John and Glen Direct drew away after passing the mile post and with a round to go, they were three lengths in front of Colours Flying and Grande Garnison. Next were James Evander, Central Range, Spring Legs and Scotch Bomb.

General John led Glen Direct by a length at the halfmile. Colours Flying had closed on them but Grande Garnison had drifted several places. BRIEF TUSSLE Glen Direct challenged General John at the home turn and, after a brief tussle, he went on to win decisively. James Evander put in good work to beat Colours Flying by a neck for third. Spring Legs was fifth, followed by Grande Garnison, Caught Napping, Globe’s Mistake, Scotch Bomb, and Central Range.
