Sydenham Gains Points In Cricket
Although beaten by Riccarton in an exciting finish, Sydenham is now only one point behind Lan* caster Park in the cricket championship. On Saturday Sydenham took first innings and bonus points; Lancaster Park was beaten by Old Boys on the first innings.
Sydenham needed only 104 runs to beat Riccarton, but succumbed to determined bowling by J. W. Kiddey and R. C. Motz. Old Collegians moved well clear of the bottom position by beating East ChristchurchShirley and St. Albans improved its position by taking a first innings decision over West Christehurch-University. Results:— Riccarton 118 and 127 beat Sydenham 142 for eight wickets, declared and 93 by 10 runs. Old Collegians 193 and 141 for four wickets beat East Christchureh-Shir-ley 133 and 200 by six wickets. St Albans 201 and 117 for seven wickets beat West Christchurch-Uni-versity 184 and 197 for eight wickets, declared by 17 runs on the first innings.
Old Boys 242 for seven wieketo declared beat Lancaster Park 238 and 134 for three wickets by four runs on the first innings. Competition points are:— Lancaster Park 52, Sydenham 51, Old Boys 49, Riccarton 45, WestUniversity 42, St. Albans 36, Old Collegians 21, East-Shirley 1. Sydenham’s match with Riccarton was the most exciting of the day, but WestUniversity fought very hard before conceding the lead to St Albans and then batted attractively in an effort to force outright victory. Old Boys had a solid score to catch but did ft fairly comfortably. Kiddey and G. A. Bartlett each took five wickets. The very consistent J. E. England was the day’s top scorer with 74 not out, and others who made half-centuries were B. F. Hastings, B. R. Prestidge, B. G. Hadlee, M. L. Ryan and J. W. Burtt.
