Firemen Have Busy Week-End

Units from the Woolston and Central stations received a call at 10.16 p.m. yesterday. Mr Hill was rescued through a window. It is believed the fire started in a chair in the lounge. About 10 acres of broom and grass near the go-kart raceway in Carrs road, Harwell, were burnt on Saturday afternoon. Five units from the Central, Sydenham and Woolston stations and a fire tender from the R.N.ZA.F. Station, Wigram, were called. Firemen fought to keep the flames from reaching a line of pine trees in the path of the blaze. Waimairi and Paparua tenders hauled water.
Water was also drawn by hoses from the shingle pit operated by Blake Brothen. Ltd. The fire burnt around three sides of the pit, but the machinery was not damaged. Fire destroyed 150 bales of hay and caused slight damage to a trade in Englefleld road, Belfast, early on Saturday. Unite from the St. Albans and Central stations extinguished the flames. A scrub fire on railway property in Halswell Junction road was put out by units from the Central and Sockburn stations at 9.10 a.m. An extensive scrub fire near the Waitlkiri golf coune was extinguished only after it had
been fought for more than two hours by units from the Central and St Albans stations and a Waimairi county fire tender. The call was received at 1.50 p.m. A rubbish fire in South Hagley park was extinguished by a unit from the Woolston station at 3.44 p.m. At 5.2 a.m. yesterday units from the Sockburn and Central stations were called to a fire which destroyed about Bft of paling fence between the properties of Joseph Wright, at 13 De Havilland street, and Ferguson Taylor, at 50 Springs road, Also destroyed were 25 bales of straw on the property of Mr Taylor. A mattress fire at the home of James Ewan, 239 Armagh street, was put out by two units from the Central station at 5.37 a.m.
An oven fire at 7 Fielding street was attended by a unit from the Sydenhsin station at 11.49 a.m. Considerable damage was done by fire to a late model car in Humphreys drive at 12.40 p.m. The blaze was extinguished by a unit from the Woolston station. The vehicle had to be towed away. The fire was caused by a short circuit in the wiring. A fire in a wall behind a heater at the home of Lenin Dunn, 35 Spencer street, was attended by units from the Sockburn and Central stations at 1.21 p.m. A unit from the Central station was called to a fire In a box of tyres at the home of Thomas Shore, 369 Armagh street, at 2.54 p.m.
