Warder Shot Dead In Aust. Gaol-Break
(X.Z. Preu Attociation —Copyright) MELBOURNE, December 19. Two prisoners killed a warder and used a prison chaplain as a hostage to escape from Melbourne’s maximum-security Pentridge Prison late today.
They attacked a guard and took his rifle, forcing the chaplain ahead of them through the prison gates. A second guard who gave chase after they bashed the chaplain over the head with a rifle butt was shot dead outside the prison.
The warder's name has not yet been released. Witnesses said the guard
was shot when the prisoners could not get into a car parked opposite the gaol. They then forced an oncoming panel van to stop and roared off. The chaplain. Salvation Army brigadier, James Hewitt, is in hospital tonight under observation and treatment. A wide police search has been mounted for the escaped prisoners. The prisoners who escaped were Ronald James Ryan, aged 40, and Peter Walker, aged 24. Police said the men are armed and dangerous. They
are both serving long sentences for robbery. Police are searching for a light grey or blue Standard van. The prisoners were dressed in prison clothes, blue jeans, white shirt with red and blue stripes and grey coats.
