1965 Winner To Defend Yachting Trophy

Scoring a convincing win in yesterday’s final trial race, the 1965 Sanders Cup champion crew of Vision (A. F. Burgess, R. Burgess and W. Parrat) will defend their title at the 1966 contest at Bluff in February.

On the form they displayed yesterday this crew should have an excellent chance of winning the championship again.

A. F. Burgess skippered Vision particularly well in this final selection race and outthought and out-sailed his two main rivals. He did some clever windward work, and with the crew moving smoothly and combining well, easily out-tacked the others. R. Burgess, at for’ard hand, had a good day with his spinnaker work and was overwhelmingly superior to his opposite numbers in Tumanako and Xavier. Vision was the fastest boat to windward on each of the three beats by some 40 to 50sec but lost time on the bottom legs of the triangular course. Tumanako’s skipper, D. Elder, pushed his boat hard and was close to Vision for most of the race. He threw

away a winning opportunity, however, when on the last beat he made a bad tactical blunder by standing away from the mark. Xavier went very well for the first lap and looked to be in the hunt but faded badly towards the end of the race. The weather gave a moderate south-easterly breeze which varied in strength and

direction but was ideal for tactical racing. Result: — Fifth Heat, 4 started.—Vision (A. F. Burgess, R. Burgess, W. Parrat), 3:53:47, 1: Tumanako (D. Elder, B. Richardson. K. McLachlan), 3:54:38, 2; Xavier <C. J. Barter, B. D. Taylor, B. Morgan), 4:04:04, 3; Enterprise (B. Lu key, R. Brown, B. Tibble), 4:13:19, 4. Final points: Vision, 3398, 1: Xavier, 2444, 2; Tumanako, 2268. 3.
