NO GRANTS FOR CHESS
Finance For Tournament Great disappointment that neither the Christchurch City Council nor the Canterbury Savings Bank had made ■ a grant to the Canterbury Chess Club to help finance its forthcoming international chess tournament was expressed by the club president (Mr A. S. Hollander) at the club’s annual meeting on Saturday. The tournament will mark the centenary of the club. “Both the council and the bank have in the past made substantial grants to sports bodies for what, at any rate to the outsider, seem far less important occasions,” Mr Hollander said.
Mr A. J. Nyman, a vicepresident, expressed great satisfaction with the chess columns being run by two Christchurch newspapers, including the column by “Fianchetto” in “The Press.”
The prizes for the year were presented by two vice-patrons. Messrs N. E. Kirk (Leader of the Opposition) and H. J. Walker (member of Parliament for St. Albans). The prize list was:— Championship.—Senior: L. Esterman 1. B. R. Anderson and A. L. Wilkinson (equal) 2. Intermediate: G. M. J. Hall 1. E. J. Ginther 2, D. S. Moulin 3. Junior: T. Ivory and C. J. McKay (equal) 1, E. B. Stroud 3. Duff Cup.—Anderson 1. W. Bereza and A. J. Nyman (equal) 2. Moore Cup: Anderson 1, Bereza 2. Improver’s Cup: Ginther. '
Messrs L. J. Mitchell, R. W. Smith, and E. J. Denys were elected life members of the club. Mr P. J. Skelierup was elected patron in place of Mr H. P. Smith. Officers elected were:— Patron Mr Skelierup: vicepatrons, Messrs Kirk, Walker, M. A. Connelly, M.P., H. R. Lake, M.P.; president, Mr Hollander: immediate past president, Mr R. W. Smith: vicepresidents, Messrs Nyman, R. M. Broadbent; secretary, Mr A. L. Wilkinson; treasurer, Mr G. M. Cleary; auditors, Messrs H. R. Best and Abbott; committee, Miss A. WellardKing, Messrs D. S. Moulin, L. Esterman, J. T. Dixon.
