Damian’s Pride-Amura Likely Waipa Double

Fields of a quality seldom found except on metropolitan courses will compete in the T.A.B. double at the Waipa Racing Club’s jubilee meeting at Te Awamutu today so that there should be some excellent preliminaries for the big holiday events a t Ellerslie. Closeness to the Auckland meeting as well as very good st :es have Attracted owners and trainers. The Ellerslie meeting begins In less than two weeks, and the prize money for today’s T.A.B. double races, the Wattle Jubilee Gold Cup and the Publicans* Handicap amount to just over £3OOO. Garden Place, Damian’s Pride, Gold Chick, Aro, Urnpah, Old and Bold, and Tardini are among the good middle-distance horses in the Wattle Gold Cup, the first leg. In the Publicans* Handicap Amura, Mansize, Alkaid, Pheroz Pride, and the Levin visitor, Prince Hagen, are notable. The going, after a week of fine, warm weather, was yesterday as fast ae it could be. and Damian's Pride, from No. 2 at the start, is a ready-made pacemaker. Except for when he failed in the Waikato Gold Cup. a mile and a half, laat time out, Damian's Pride has shown grand form during the laat month or so. Hi habit, la to rush te the front in the first furlong and against even the strongest opposition he is always likely to stay there. Garden Place, after being disappointing for a long period, has regained a peak of form which gives him .an Impreeeive background of a first, a third and a second from his laat three starts.

Amura and her rider. N. B Holland, are bound to try for an end-to-end win tn the Publicans’ Handicap and over the five and a half furlongs—an unusually short course for an open sprint—they will take catching. In her laat race Amura won all the way over six furlongs at Ellerslie from a wide barrier position. Meanwhile, whenever asked for speed, she has turned on briffl it gallops in her training. Prince Hagen, a four-year-old gelding, has secured two firsts and a second from his last three starts, form which suggests he has pace well out of the ordinary, Selections:—
