ONCE A DAIRY BOY Now He ’s Farming M.C.C. Bowling
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. Australia’s newest cricket idol, the 19-year-old Doug Walters, first learned to bat behind a cow bale in an obscure fanning village, 140 miles north-west of Sydney. It was the bowling of his elder sister, Colleen, now 21, that trained him for his first ehanee in senior cricket selection for the New South Wales colts side at the age of 17. The dairy boy from Raglan, near Dungog, has had a fairytale rise since
the days, only three years ago, when he was milking cows and learning his cricket on a crude wicket he made by kicking down ant-hills. At 19, he is the youngest Australian to make a test debut since lan Craig, then 17, played against South Africa in 1952-53. Now he is the first Australian to score centuries in his first two matches against a touring English team. His 155 yesterday in his first test against England was preceded last month by 129 for New South Wales against the M.C.C.
