CITY COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF
Before going any further with the design of a subway system for Cathedral square information was needed on the underlying subsoils, the city development committee reported to the City Council last evening. Authority was given for up to £2OO to be spent on bores. Empire Games.—The council agreed to underwrite the Commonwealth and Empire Games if they were allocated to Christchurch. £3OO Donation.— The council agreed to give £3OO to the Templeton Hospital chapel appeal. The finance committee commended the fact that the appeal was being made throughout the area served by the hospital. Electoral Reform.—A request by the Christchurch Drainage Board for the reopening of discussions on electoral reform proposals was referred to a special committee consisting of Crs. A. R. Guthrey, H. P. Smith, R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., and H. E. Denton. Domains Board.—As the
council had taken over and fulfilled all the functions of the, old Christchurch Domains Board there appeared to be no reason for the board to continue in existence, the parks and recreation committee reported. It was agreed that the ctty solicitors be asked to advise on steps that would need to be taken to abolish the board. Library Space.—To alleviate the space problem at the Canterbury Public Library it was proposed that the librarian’s house should be converted for library purposes, the town hall and library committee said. A further report was promised. Refused.—A motor repair garage on the north-west cornet of Barbadoes and Purchas streets was refused by the council after the town planning committee had said it would be a soot zone and detract from the amenities of the locality. New Taxi Stands.— New stands for taxis on the south side of Cashel street between High and Colombo streets and on the south side of Gloucester street near the National Airways Corporation's offices were approved.
