Staying Test For Damian’s Pride Today

•'The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND.

Whether Damian's Pride, after making the pace, will he able to last the mile and a half, is a main consideration in today’s Waikato Gold Cup at Te Rapa.

Damian's Pride is almost certain to be set an end-to-end win. On firm footing it will take a very fast gallop to beat him.

1 In his last race Damiian’s ■ Pride won over 11 furlongs at I Avondale in 2min 16 3-ssec. ;The time before, he was sucI cessful over the same distance. at Ellerslie, in 2min 17 2-s®ec. On each occasion he reached the front after a furlong or so and stayed there gamely until the finish. When he won at Ellerslie, in the Alison Cup, Damian's Pride carried 7-8. At Avondale he carried 8-1 and his weight in the Gold Cup is 8-6.

At six years old Damian's Pride is so much improved that there seems no saying how far he will go successfully. His trainer, M. C. Conway, is very hopeful he will run a mile and a half and further. FRONT RUNNERS Besides Damian’s Pride, the only out-and-out front runners in the Gold Cup are Regal Ruler and perhaps Golden Defoe. Regal Ruler is the more likely to try for the pacemaking but from No. 26 at the start it seems a very faint chance that he will head Damian's Pride. Elkayel, Tatu, Aro. Tardini. Kiwi Fox, and Apa hold good middle-distance form and would be hard to beat at top form. Among the light-weights Garden Place, Passionate and Cariynn are capable, so the field taken all round is pretty open. Unless there is a sudden change in the conditions to cause unexpected scratchings the fields for both legs of the T.A.B. double, the Waikato Gold Cup and the Grandstand Handicap. will number very close to 24. the limit for each race. The Grandstand Handicap looks full of possibilities. Foremost are Michael, Hilldale and Kangaroo Town.

The busy Cambridge filly. Urupukapuka. will have her tenth race for the season in the Waikato Guineas and she seems bound to be a warm favourite. Only Farmers’ Boy. Fairfleet and Admiral Donnington of her opponents seem to be Urupukapuka’s class. She was successful last Saturday over the 10 furlongs course of the Guineas in the Foxbridge Plate and in a handicap would have considerably more to carry than any of the other Guineas candidates.

With 8-5. Urupukapuka will be receiving 51b from Farmer’s Boy and 51b from Admiral Donnington. Fairfleet, a filly, has the same weight as Urunukapuka. Urupukapuka has already won the Avondale Guineas and the Great Northern Guineas so a further success today would give her a very notable treble.

The track has been fast for the training work of the last week and promises to provide excellent footing. Selections:
