Tilka Fancied Woodville Runner

The stablemates, Tilka and Lionheart, remain in favour for the T.A.B. double at the Woodville District Jockey Club’s meeting today, but the likelihood of overnight rain is worrying the connexions of several fancied horses. The weather yesterday was fine and warm and the track fast, but showers have been forecast. If there is rain, the only effect it is likely to have on the track is to make it slippery.

One of the favourites which could be seriously affected is Might in the second leg, the Oete Handicap. On Tuesday at Levin Might showed hdis best form of the season with a strong finish into a close third. He has come along fine style since, but is useless unless the ground is hard.

Scratching time for both legs of the T.A.B. double was 5 p.m. today, but there is ample power for the judicial stewards to allow late scratchings without penalty if, for instance, conditions become suddenly unsuitable for any horse. Versatile Runner Tilka, which is in the Bolton Handicap, can manage most types of ground and as a proved middle-distance runner coming up to her top form she is logically the favourite, shading Worthy Chat and Surf Boy. Worthy Chat, second at Levin, is well placed in the weights, because he could not be penalised for his placing. Shady will also have a following, but only if the going stays firm. Though Sparkling Maid and Royal Polo are outside the favoured division it would not be a major surprise if either won. The Oete Handicap is even more open. Lionheart is selected, but he will not have much over several form runners. Alkira was impressive with her solid run for second to Prince Hagen at Bulls and in view of Prince Hagen's follow:ng form —second at Napier Park and first at Levin—Alkira must be in today’s finisb. Two behind Prince Hagen at Levin were Jetmate and Might, which are against Alkira in the Oete Handicap.
