Next Day Likely At Wyndham

“The Press** Special Service

INVERCARGILL. A new light harness season’s racing in Southland will get under way with the Wyndham Trotting Club’s spring meeting today, for which a nine-race programme has been drawn.

Next Day in the Hunter Handicap and Bar None coupled with Failax in the Mercantile Handicap, will be a strongly fancied T.A.B. double combination.

Next Day will be having her first start from D. Todd’s stable. Bar None has had the advantage of recent racing and this will be a factor in his favour. The Washdyke pair, Bar None and Failax, from G. D. Shand’s team, will form a strong bracket in the Mercantile Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Both have had the benefit of recent racing, with Bar None appearing the stronger prospect. At his last start he finished a respectable fifth in a useful field at Addington earlier in the month.

At Oamaru last month, at his first start for the season, he finished third behind Lusty Lad and the Derby winner, Bass Strait.

On the strength of that run. he will be a sound prospect today. Waitaki Smoke has drawn the second line, and this will be against him. At his first start for the season, at Oamaru last month, he finished second to a useful pacer in Gershwin and in view of that performance he would look a strong chance. Luck in the running will be a factor, however. The weather has been fine and the track will be firm. Selections: 12.30 p.m.—Mimihau Handicap No. 1: Enniss, Cathpete.
