ANCILLARY STAFF
School Board Dissatisfied
Members of the Mairehau High School board of governors expressed their dissatisfaction with the reply from the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) to the New Zealand Secondary School Boards’ Association’s correspondence on ancillary staffing at their monthly meeting The headmaster (Mr A. B. Ryan) said that ancillary staffing was one of the most urgent problems concerning the practising teacher. He said that the main difficulty was to relieve teachers of administrative work, and get them back into the class room.
The action of setting up a special committee to deal with such problems stifled or discouraged legitimate criticism, and the subsequent refusal to divulge the findings of such a committee did not inspire confidence, he said. The secretary of the board (Mr P. J. Halligan) said that problems of incidental expenses were probably being given priority, and that it was unlikely that extra money could be allowed for ancillary staff.
The board decided that it could take no definite steps other than that of supporting the association.
