SYDNEY.

After a whirlwind opening stand of 151 in 102 minutes by R. W. Barber and E. W. Russell, the M.C.C. hammered the New South Wales bowling for 398 runs while losing only five wickets i on the opening day of its match at Sydney yesterday.

Barber, first out after hitting 90 runs with 11 fours, cut, drove and slashed ruthlessly all round the ground before he was run out going for a quick single.

Russell’s 93 in 160 minutes was a model of text-book cricket, his elegant-looking drives off the front and back foot and deflections bringing him most of his runs. New South Wales helped the touring team with a num ber of fielding lapses.

GAVE CHANCES M. C. Cowdrey, who stayed 111 minutes for 63, gave chances to gully and slip, and M. J. K. Smith (59), his partner in a fourth-wicket stand of 120, should have been caught at slip before he scored.

Late in the day, the harddriving J. M. Park (56 not out) dominated a free-hitting sixth-wicket partnership with the all-rounder, F. J. Titmus. The leg-spinner, P. Philpott. rated almost certain to be in the Australian team for the first test on December 10, took three of the five wickets to fall, but conceded 99 runs in 18 overs.

Philpott, whose first six overs cost 38 runs, improved later and maintained a steady length without looking dangerous.

P. Leslie, the 18-year-old left-arm pace bowler, and an eleventh hour replacement for G. Corling, had a harsh baptism in first-class cricket. His first over, which included a no-ball, was punished for 16 runs. Leslie and D. Rennesberg, with whom he shared the opening attack, both got occasional lift but their direction was atrocious.
