Widow’s Benefit
Sir, —In this morning’s issue you reported a meeting of the National Council of Women at which remits seeking increased benefits for widows were approved for submission to the Minister. The weekly rates quoted at the meeting were very much understated. One would think that such a national body would make sure of the figures before allowing the report to be published. I would suggest the correct rates be obtained from the Social Security Department.—Yours, etc., FACTS. November 19, 1965. [The president of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women (Mrs M. Ashley) replied that the remit would be passed by a screening committee and then debated on by every branch of the council before going to the Minister. The correct amounts had been stated at the meeting and been checked with the Social Security Department; but during the discussion other figures were mentioned and an error had occurred in the report. The branch was most particular to obtain the correct information before any action was taken.]
