“The Press” In 1865

November 28 PROFESSOR JACOBS.—The Town Hail was fairly attended last evening on the occasion of the first appearance of the Wizard Jacobs. Mr Jacobs, on the rise of the curtain, informed the audience that he did not, in one instance at least, intend to deceive them, and that was, that he should deceive them as much as possible by his manual dexterity. The Wizard said that he must apologise for any deficiencies in the entertainment, as he had had but little time for preparation, but on future occasions. if they could discover how any of his tricks were done, he should he most happy that they would inform their friends of the process At the upper end of the hall a stage has been erected, the furniture of which consists of damask hangings, which, together

with the massive and showy character of the apparatus used by the Professor, gave the hall a very pleasing appearance. The first part of the entertainment consisted of a series of very cleverly executed tricks, a description of which would be almost impossible; however, they succeeded in keeping the audience in capital humor. The second part commenced with an extemporaneous song upon subjects suggested by the audience, and this portion of the entertainment was very amusing. The magic bottle followed, after which the wonderful canary, the enchanted seat, &c, brought the evening to a conclusion. Professor Jaeobs has a very happy knack of amusing by anecdotes whilst he deludes, and this perhaps is not the least successful part of his entertainment.
