Postponement Of Trial
The trial of Thomas Mervyn Johnstone, a 34-year-old bus driver, on a charge of rape, was unable to proceed in the Supreme Court yesterday, as set down, because the principal Crown witness—the 17-year-old girl complainant—had not arrived from Dunedin, where she is now living.
A message from the Christchurch police to the Dunedin police, requiring the girl to appear in the Supreme Court at Christchurch yesterday morning to give her evidence, was found not to have reached her.
Arrangements were made yesterday to bring the girl to Christchurch so that the trial can proceed this morning.
