CONVICTION REVERSED
Televised Trial The Reason
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) AUSTIN i (Texas), Nov. 25. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, acting on instructions from the United States Supreme Court, has reversed the swindling conviction of the farm financier, Billie Sol Estes, because of extensive television coverage.
Estes was sentenced to eight years gaol after conviction in 1962. He is already serving a 15-year sentence for fraud. The Supreme Court has upheld that conviction. The Appeal Court previously affirmed Estes’ swindling conviction and eight-year sentence. However, it now says it has no choice except to reverse the conviction in view of the Supreme Court’s decision that Estes did not have a fair trial because of extensive television coverage.
