Doctors’ Incomes
Sir. —My advice to “Engineer’s Wife” is to divorce her husband forthwith and marry a doctor, if she thinks it will make her happier. The figure published recently as a doctor’s earning annually is not a salary! Salaries are considerbly less. It is the income that a doctor may earn if he goes into practice in a busy area, prepared to give
his full time to his patients, 24 hours a day. Some do this. It may be to earn enough to pay for studies overseas, or in order to afford a refresher course. There are no grants in the medical profession. It may be because it is in the blood. It may be so that he can afford to put his own family through the same expensive years of training that he had himself. Or it may even be just for the money! Most, however, earn less. They prefer to have a little free time with their families and. hobbies and alternate week-ends off in which to enjoy them.— Yours, etc., C.J.B. November 24, 1965.
