CUP SMASH FINDING

Matloch First To Fall

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The Melbourne Cup smash in which Matloch, Bore Head and River Seine fell near the live furlongs, was found by the stewards to be accidental. They said it had been established that Matloch, ridden by J. Johnson, when improving his position to take a narrow opening between Midlander and Light Fingers, clipped the heels of Light Fingers and fell. Light Fingers had moved out slightly to avoid the heels of Prince Grant and had then been held up by Strauss, which shifted in a little from Sir Wynyard, racing on the outside.

Bore Head and River Seine, which were following Matloch, fell as a result. The stewards added that as a result Red William, Pleasanton, Prince Camillo and Algal on were inconvenienced.
