RACING Strong South Entry For Auckland Cup

Fieldmaster and Palisade, two of the stars of the New Zealand Cup meeting, have, been entered for the £15,500 Auckland Cup, run on January 1.

Fieldmaster won the New Zealand Cup and Palisade won the Canterbury Gold Cup at the C.J.C. cup carnival earlier this month. Being both proved performers at two miles—Palisade won over that distance last season—they will put strong southern interest into the rich Ellerslie race if they take their place in the field. It should be a capacity field this season: the race has attracted 100 nominations. Other notable South Island entrants for the Auckland Cup are Eiffel Tower and Lucky Son, winners of the Wellington and Auckland Cups respectively last season; and Royal Estate, winner of the Dunedin and James Hazlett Gold Cups last season.

Lucky Son will be attempting a feat that has eluded some good stayers in the last few years—of winning the Auckland Cup in successive years.

Cuddle won in 1935 and agan in 1936. Cheval de Volee won in 1938 and again in 1939, but no horse has won it more than once since then. Beaumaris won as a four-year-old in 1950, the year after he ran third in Swanee’s Cup. Ruato did not seem to know how to run a bad race over two miles at Ellerslie. He won the 1961 Auckland Cup. A year later he was

second to the long shot Floutulla and at his third attempt he had to settle for second again behind the brilliant Stipulate. The Auckland Cup field in Stipulate’s year was strong by any standards.

Even Stevens, winner of the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups a few weeks earlier, was third and Gay Filou was fourth. The Great Northern Derby has drawn 56 entries, one of which is the New Zealand Derby winner, Roman Consul. Baraboo, the top sprinter at the Auckland Cup meeting last year, and winner of the Stewards’ Handicap at Ricearton on New Zealand Cup day, has been entered for the Railway Handicap.
