Television In The Sewers

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. The Hutt Valley Drainage Board may become the first local body in New Zealand to use a re-mote-control television camera system for inspecting sewers. At a meeting of the board today it was stated that replies had been received from two tenderers in Australia which make the equipment.

It was resolved to send a senior member of the

board’s staff to investigate and report on equipment offered.

Similar equipment has been in use in Britain for two years and is also being used in Perth and Sydney. The system is operated by a three-man team. One stays in a van which acts as a mobile control centre and two others winch the camera through the sewers from manhole to manhole.

The camera moves through the pipes lighting its own way and a picture of the interior is relayed to the screen in the control van.

The camera can be stopped and a stillcamera mounted in front of the screen can be used for a photographic record.

Through this system faults can be speedily pinpointed.
