SCHOOLBOYS HONOURED

Rotary Club Awards

Twelve primary schoolboys yesterday received 1965 honour roll certificates at a Christchurch Rotary Club luncheon at which they were guests of honour. The boys and their schools were: B. Hood (Heathcote), A. Dickie (Mount Pleasant), R. Tang (Sumner), R. Ebert (Redcliffs), M. Cuddihy (St. Michael's), A. Ferguson (Victory), P. Quinlivan (Xavier College), A. Scott (Bamford Street), A. Stewart (Linwood Intermediate), D. Dwyer (Woolston), C. Green (Phillipstown), and R. Boyd (Shirley Intermediate). The boys were accompanied by their headmasters.

Rotary’s honour roll programme began in Christchurch in the 1959 school year. Selection is based on leadership, character, scholarshin, and appearance. The Christchurch Rotary Club president (Mr R. M. Young) welcomed the boys and the headmasters. He congratulated the boys on their achievement and told the headmasters it was a source of gratification that the scheme was so well supported throughout schools in the club’s district.

The guest speaker, Mr I. T. Galloway, rector of St. Andrew’s College, said choosing a “Miss New Zealand” or a “Miss World” was a relatively simple matter,, whereas to assess boys for leadership and character was f ar* from being an easy task.

He advised the boys as they grew up to try to develop the qualities for which they had been selected yesterday. “You show potential now; I wonder what you will make of it?” ’he said.

He suggested the key to true leadership in life was that of selfless service to others. Mr Galloway said the world was made up of two types of person. Those who made things happen and those to whom things happened—the active and the passive. Mr Galloway said qualities of leadership would be needed in many spheres of New Zealand life in future years. He urged the boys to develop independence of spirit, to set high standards, and be prepared to accept responsibility.
