MR J. C. DENHAM
The death occurred yesterday of Mr John Cuthbert Denham, of Mount Arden, Hawarden, a well-known farmer in the district and a member of the Waipara County Council for the Waitohi. riding. Mr Denham was 54.
The son of Mr Cuthbert Denham, of Sumner, Mr Denham was brought up on Glen Alton station in the Clarence Valley when his mother married Mr J. E. Todhunter. He attended the Woodbank school and Christ’s College. Before he joined the forces during World War II he was managing Glen Alton.
Mr Denham went overseas with the 10th Reinforcements and served with the 20th Armoured Regiment, reaching the rank of captain. He was wounded at Orsogna in Italy and was mentioned in dispatches. After the war he took up the Mount Arden property at Hawarden and in recent years had taken into partnership a son-in-law, Mr Donal Greenslade. Mr Denham was interested in breeding Corriedale sheep for hill country. As well as being a member of the Waipara County Council, to which he was returned unopposed at the last elections, he served on the Wai: tohi Rabbit Board. He was chairman twice of the Hawar-den-Waikari branch of Federated Farmers and was also a former president of the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association. For the last nine year’s he was recorder in the local parish of the Church Of England and has been on the vestry of the Horsley Downs church. Mr Denham is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Madeline Meares, of Fendalton, and three daughters— Angela, who is Mrs N. A. Macfarlane, of Rotherham: Sandra, who is Mrs Donal Greenslade, of Hawarden; and Diana, who is Mrs David Bates, of Whitecliffs.
