The new Chief of the Naval Staff (Rear-Admiral J. O’C. Ross) will visit Christchurch at the week-end. On Sunday morning he will attend the parade outside H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus when the Canterbury division of the R.N.Z.N.V.R. receives the charter of the freedom of the city of Christchurch. In the afternoon Admiral Ross will make a launch trip around Lyttelton harbour and visit Ripa Island. On Monday he will pay official calls and in the evening present prizes to members of the Canterbury division at a parade at Pegasus.
Mr R. Churchill-Bateman, the assistant Australian Government Trade Commissioner in Wellington, will arrive in Christchurch on November 29 to act for the Australian Government Trade Commissioner for the South Island (Mr M. G. B. Coultas), who will be on leave. Mr J. B. Darnell, DirectorGeneral of the Post Office, will retire in March.—(P.A.) The Lyttelton Borough Council on Monday evening received with regret the resignation of its assistant Town Clerk (Mr R. A. Sowden), who is retiring after 41 years’ service.
