QUALITY OF MILK

Discussions In Camera

Reporters were asked yesterday before official business began to leave a special meeting between a committee of the New Zealand Milk Board and the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board. The subject to be discussed was the constitution of milk, particularly the aspect of solids-not-fat content.

In a preparatory address to the meeting, the chairman of the local board (Mr H. E. Denton) said that his board’s view was that the reporters should be present. He called for an expression from the committee of the New Zealand Milk Board as to their views. The chairman of the New Zealand Milk Board (Mr L. V. Phillips) afcked Mr Denton if his committee members “could have a little conversation.” The committee members then held a brief discussion between themselves, after which Mr Phillips said that “the board members feel it would perhaps make the meeting more profitable and productive and ensure freer discussion if we were not to have reporters present.” Mr Phillips said he could not recall an occasion of this kind at which press records were taken. He agreed with Mr Denton that it would be in order to issue a statement to the press at the end of the meeting. Other members of the committee of the New Zealand board, who came from Wellington to attend the meeting, were Messrs A. W. Montgomerie and D. J. Henderson.
