RACING Vivien Robe Has Easy Win At Hokitika

(From Our Own Reporter)

GREYMOUTH. The T.A.B. double on the first day of the Westland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Hokitika on Saturday was won by Vivien Robe and So True. The dividend was £2O 3s 6d for £l.

Vivien Robe is a five-year-old chestnut mare hy Dogger Bank from Ideal Robe, owned by Mr T. W. Lalor, of Greymouth, and trained for him at Reefton by his brother, J. Lalor.

I So True is a three-year-old ! bay filly by Someo from True Blend, owned by Mr A. Clouston and trained for him at Masterton by J. T. Walker. The on-course double was won by Time and Tide and : Scribbler. The dividend was £8 Ils 6d for £l, a small return because of the big betting on Time And Tide, l whose winning dividend was [2ss. Cold Southerly The meeting was held in bright sunshine with a cold southerly wind. The track was soft after rain during the week. There was a fair attendance. Totalisator investments oncourse totalled £12,315, compared with £7765 on the first day of the corresponding meeting last year. Vivien Robe led all the way in the first leg of the double, the Haast Pass Handicap. Passing the stand she was followed by General'Gilbert, Waitohi, Waverley and Meandering. There was little change in the order with half the journey covered and Vivien Robe was more than a length clear of Meandering, Waitohi, Waverley and General Gilbert rounding the home bend. ' There Waitohi and Waverley I began to weaken. Vivien Robe [entered the straight a clear leader and withstood all challenges in the run home where she was a length and a half I clear of Meandering. General Gilbert was only a nose behind Meandering, with a length and a half to Totara Lad. i Chatsgay, Lady Dilemma, Howe Good, Waverley, Gabbler, Gold View, and Waitohi followed. Emulating the feat of Vivien Robe, So True began best in the second leg, the Lake Matheson Hack Handicap, and gave nothing else a chance to win by three lengths. The warm favourite and topweight, Prince Callan, had a forlorn chase after the leader to finish second, four lengths clear of Coral Prince, with a neck to Mission Girl.
