Mauger Dominant At Templeton Speedway
Bitterly cold weather at the Templeton speedway stadium on Saturday night resulted in the smallest crowd this season. About 1000 people saw some fine racing. Several races lacked excitement because the fields were too small. This was particularly noticeable in the three-quarter midget and stock rod races, but there were some good fields in speed car and motor-cycle events.
I. Mauger, the British provincial league champion, who has recently returned to New Zealand racing after five years overseas, continued to demonstrate his prowess. In spite of stiff handicaps, he was first twice and second once from three starts. In his third race, Mauger. starting 80 yards behind the present New Zealand speedway motor-cycle champion. M. Burt, quickly established his superiority. He made up ground strongly to defeat B. Le Grosse and Burt who both started on 50 and who finished second and third. Mauger’s time for the four laps was 90.4 sec. T. Hall, the South Island speed car champion, in the second speed car handicap race, had an exciting struggle with E. Murray for first place, but finished second. R. Clive, who has not done much driving this season, managed to hold Hall for a time, but he had to succumb to Hall’s superior driving to be placed third.
In the speed car scratch race, Murray and Hall again showed their masterly techniques. Racing between the two was desperately close, until Murray, perhaps pushing his car too hard, slewed into a fence, leaving Hall to win in 2min 13.5 sec. The stock-rod races were disappointing. In the first heat there was an exceptionally poor field, with only three cars taking part. A. Saunders and A. Wellbeloved
shared the lead for a time, 'until Wellbeloved lost control and went off the track, |He attempted to return to ' the cinders, but spun into the path of W. Rushbridge making a collision unavailable. Some exciting driving was provided in the close contest of P. Annan and D. Cameron in the stock-rod final. Cameron's challenge to the winner, Annan, brought him close to collision several times, but when his final spurt failed to take him through, he was forced to give way to Annan, whose winning time was 2min 31 4 sec.
