SCHOOLS’ HOSTELS

‘Size The Key To Economy’ Lack of finance hindered the establishment and maintenance of school hostels and boarding establishments, a member of the Christchurch Boys’ High School’s board of governor’s Mr C. H. McPhail, reported to the board's monthly meeting. Mr McPhail recently attended a Nelson conference for school boards with hostels. Many North Island schools had suggested that their hostels might be run more economically if they could be expanded to cater for 120 boarders. said Mr McPhail. The headmaster (Mr C. F. S. Caldwell) said 80 persons used to be considered economic for a hostel and some schools felt the optimum number was between 50 and 60. If hostels were expanded to accommodate 120 it would be necessary to employ another housemaster and this would be equivalent to running two separate establishments under me roof. Asked if the high school’s hostel was coping with the demand, Mr Caldwell said it was fully booked for the next 12 years, and eight applications had been received for 1978.
