Visible Again The Franz Josef Glacier is again visible through the window behind the altar in St. James’s Church at Waiho, the Press Association reports. The famous view was lost in 1950 when the glacier receded up the gorge. On Thursday, only hours before the opening of the new Franz Josef Hotel and two days before the opening of the new Haast scenic highway, the glacier came into view again through the altar window. Three days ago, the glacier came into view from the hotel site for the first time for 10 years. Risky? “Interest in town planning is almost the kiss of death when it comes to elections,” said Dr. W. R. Holmes, indicating reservations on his part when he yesterday accepted the position of North Canterbury Catchment Board representative on the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority. £2OO From Appeal More than 50 collectors, including 30 sea cadets, some from Christ's College and from Christchurch Boys’ High School, took part in the Canterbury branch of the Navy League’s street appeal yesterday. The sum of £2OO was raised towards' running expenses of the training ships Cornwall and Steadfast. Proceeds from the appeal will be used mainly for the establishment of the training ship Steadiast, the Christchurch open unit of the sea cadets at Cass Bay. The president of the league (Mr J. P. Shelley) said that he was pleased with the result, especially considering the comparatively small number of collectors and that he was particularly grateful to the boys who collected after school. Hotel Hours “The time is ripe for another referendum on licensing hours,” said the Minister of Police (Mr Allen) to the conference of the South Islanl Local Bodies’ Association in Hokitika. A referendum should be held “away from the hurly-burly of a General Election.” Personally, he favoured the people of districts voting for the hours that suited them, the Minister said. Called Off The low-level aerobatics contest for the Lawless Cup had to be called off at the Central Flying School, Wigram, yesterday afternoon. Two airmen had completed their flights when the cloud base became too low. There are eight contestants, including two Malayan Air Force officers.
