With the opening of the Paringa-Haast link. South ■ Westland will never be the same again. Its great attraction was its remoteness, and ; sparse population—who had a life all their own. But now ! thousands will travel the road iin all kind of vehicles. SerI vice stations, motels, camping i grounds, and shops are expected to spring up to cater ; for them. Many travellers j and tourists may not have the I same respect for property, the bush, and wild life as have ' South Westland residents, or ! climbers, shooters and fisher- ' men with a genuine love for i the back-country. South Westj land folk are used to having parcels dropped at their gates, i where they may remain for some time before being picked up. Theft is rare. This might not be so in the future. Progress has its penalties.
